He (Rabbi Elazar HaKappar) used to say:
“— for against your will were you created, against your will were you born, against your will do you live, against your will will you die, and against your will will you stand in judgment before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.” Avos 4:29
The more I ponder this the more I see that the only free will we have is the will to choose between good and evil, every action we do falls under good or evil.
Do we have any power of our own outside of the choice of good or evil? I do not believe so – do we have the power to open eyes that G-d has closed? Do we succeed or fail on our own? No, it is G-d who grants success and failure, it is G-d who grants us everything we have in life.
The scenario has never changed since G-d put us on the earth; we have but one choice in life, to choose right from wrong beyond that we have not been given any other power. All choices fall under one or the other.
We can toil till blood comes from our hands and if G-d does not grant success we will not have it, He is the giver of all things.
If HASHEM will not build the house, in vain do its builders labor on it; if HASHEM will not guard the city in vain is the watchman vigilant.
A man’s heart plans his way: but HASHEM directs his steps.
These passages plainly tell us that the plans of man are under the control of the will of G-d. The only thing we have that is not under his will is the choice He gave us to choose to do good or evil, right or wrong, obedience or disobedience.
Sincerely ponder this because against your will you will die and against your will you will stand before the Judge and be judged by your choices, not your beliefs, it is your actions that will make or break you not what you believe in or on.
