After the great Flood the Creator gave mankind permission to eat meat but it came with instructions. This new instruction completed the list of basic laws that mankind was to live by; which today are known as The Seven Noahide Commandments.
The Creator instructed Noah in Genesis 9:3-4 “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; like the green herbage I have given you everything. But flesh; with its soul its blood you shall not eat.” Artscroll Chumash.
Mankind was now given the permission to eat meat but with limitation. The animal has to be dead before we can take its meat, thus the prohibition of eating meat taken from a live animal.
Below is a link to blog from a good friend and fellow Sheva Mitzvot/7 Laws student and observer. He has written a very good and scholarly article on this prohibition.
With his permission I am sharing his blog here on my site.
